"SAGEMONO" is the term used to describe these hanging devices which included purses, pouches, pipe holders, and others. The most commonly known sagemono is the "INRO" which is an elaborately decorated, multi-compartment case used to hold snuff. Cords from the tobacco box would attach to a "button" or "toggle" called "NETSUKE" (pronounced Nets-Kay). The NETSUKE would slip under and over the OBI, or sash, of the kimono and securely hold the tobacco box in place. A smaller bead , called OJIME, was strung on the cords just above the box to put pressure on the tobacco box and prevent the compartments from becoming loose and spilling the tobacco. Most modern Inro and Netsuke are carved out of wood, bone, Hippo or Mammoth Ivory and include scrimshaw work. The Netsuke pieces I offer, unless noted otherwise, are contemporay, not antique. |
